Justin Franz is a writer and photographer based in Whitefish, Montana. Originally from Augusta, Maine, he moved west in 2007 to attend The University of Montana, where he graduated with a degree in journalism in May 2011.
Currently Franz is a reporter for the Flathead Beacon in Kalispell, Montana. He has also served as a news contributor for Railroads Illustrated Magazine since 2007. In the summer of 2010 he worked for Maine Magazine and Maine Home+Design in Portland, Maine, up-and-coming lifestyle magazines from Thomas Kelley Publications.
His photography has been featured in a variety of national and regional railroad magazines including Trains Magazine, Railpace Newsmagazine, Passenger Train Journal and Railroad Explorer. His images have appeared in numerous railroad books including Alcos Northeast, Bangor and Aroostook: The Life of a Maine Railroad Tradition and Rails Across New England - Volume One. As a writer, Franz has focused on major feature stories that have covered a range of topics from the return of passenger rail service to southern Montana and the University of Montana presidency, to Glacier National Park and the war in Iraq.
In the Spring of 2011, his story The War Within, about the war in Iraq, won a Hearst Journalism Award.
